coloring for toddlers

I’m doing some research into the creative abilities of younger children – under 3 years of age – for a potential new freelance client. I’ve always assumed it’s a messy messy process and really didn’t begin until you hit preschool! Thanks to my daughter, I’ve realized I want to encourage her to make things as soon as possible (she’s 6 months old and I’ve already started her Making Box with random junk mail stickers and other flotsam that shows up around the house like makeup jars, etc!) Crayola has a line of products called Crayola Beginnings which is promoting an earlier creative start. The best part is the quick tutorial on mark-making by age at their website. Some of the products they’ve introduced are interesting, including triangular crayons to improve a toddlers grip, and no-mess paint balls with brushes at their tips. (some of the toys are really reaching though) A good rule of thumb for a child’s first drawing tools is the larger they are, the easier the grip. I think these swirly recycled ladybug crayons from etsy seller lil boo & co, shown above look great. What a great surprise to watch the colors change as you’re drawing.
